Becoming a Missionary

My beloved brethren, you and I, today and always, are to bless all peoples in all the nations of the earth. You and I, today and always, are to bear witness of Jesus Christ and declare the message of the Restoration. You and I, today and always, are to invite all to receive the ordinances of salvation. Proclaiming the gospel is not a part-time priesthood obligation. It is not simply an activity in which we engage for a limited time or an assignment we must complete as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Rather, missionary work is a manifestation of our spiritual identity and heritage. We were foreordained in the premortal existence and born into mortality to fulfill the covenant and promise God made to Abraham. We are here upon the earth at this time to magnify the priesthood and to preach the gospel. That is who we are, and that is why we are here--today and always.

Homecoming

One of the biggest things that set The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints apart from other churches is temples. A few of the frequently asked questions on mormon.org state are: What are Mormon temples used for? What is the difference between attending church and going to the temple? Why are only some Mormons allowed into temples? Is there something secret going on in Mormon temples? Why do Mormons perform baptisms for the dead? Can a husband and wife be together forever? Do Mormons believe that families will live together in heaven?

All of these questions are great and it would be really good if I could address all of them, but mormon.org already did. My purpose in talking about temples today is to give us all a clearer understanding of why temples would be important today and along with that why we need make attending the temple one of our top priorities, I pray that as I speak today I may do so with the assistance of the Holy Spirit and I also pray that all of you may be able to have the same assistance in learning from the words that I will speak.

First I would like to talk about where temples even came from: In the bible dictionary it explains all about ancient temple worship and why they used them, it reads: A temple is literally a house of the Lord, a holy sanctuary in which sacred ceremonies and ordinances of the gospel are performed by and for the living and also in behalf of the dead. A place where the Lord may come, it is the most holy of any place of worship on the earth. Only the home can compare with the temple in sacredness.

Whenever the Lord has had a people on the earth who will obey his word, they have been commanded to build temples in which the ordinances of the gospel and other spiritual manifestations that pertain to exaltation and eternal life may be administered. In cases of extreme poverty or emergency, these ordinances may sometimes be done on a mountaintop (see D&C 124:37–55). This may be the case with Mount Sinai and the Mount of Transfiguration. The tabernacle erected by Moses was a type of portable temple, since the Israelites were traveling in the wilderness.

From Adam to the time of Jesus, ordinances were performed in temples for the living only. After Jesus opened the way for the gospel to be preached in the world of spirits, ceremonial work for the dead, as well as for the living, has been done in temples on the earth by faithful members of the Church. Building and properly using a temple is one of the marks of the true Church in any dispensation, and is especially so in the present day.

So what do we do in temples today? One of the things that I would like to expound upon would be Covenants, what is a covenant? A covenant is a two way promise that is made between God and man, God sets the conditions that he will bless us with certain things as we obey his word and teachings. For example: Baptism is a covenant that we make with God, we promise to keep the commandments, to take upon ourselves the name of Christ, and to always remember him. I return we are promised with the Gift of the Holy Ghost. But this promise is only good when we hold up to our half of the bargain, luckily we can repent and have the constant companionship of the Holy Spirit, and it is important that we do continually repent so that we can have continual Blessing from the Lord.

Likewise in the Temple we make very similar covenants where we promise things and then are promised blessings in return. In the temple we also perform sacred Ordinances such as baptism and other sacred Ordinances in behalf of those who have passed on and did not have the opportunity to perform those things for themselves.

Something that I feel is important to include is that the ancient tradition of Temple practice is something that we currently practice. Because the Church of Jesus Christ has been restored again to the Earth, Jesus Christ’s original church is again on the earth. Along with that church comes all of the teachings and practices which were anciently taught and practiced.

This is Made Possible because of the Priesthood Authority or in other words Gods Power given to man. This Authority is described in the scriptures as Christ calls and ordains his disciples: John 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have achosen you, and bordained you, that ye should go and bring forth cfruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in myd name, he may give it you.

The Power and Authority of God has been Given to man, so that we can perform Ordinances, so that we can perform Blessings and act in God’s name, and it is because this Authority has been restored that we can do Temple work today! These things would not be available to us if we didn’t have the priesthood, but because the church has been restored and because God once again has given us his power to act in his name and has called prophets again to the earth we don’t have to question the work being done and we don’t have to worry about it not being done. Because God loves us and he has restored His Power and Authority again on the earth.

On my mission I had the opportunity to see one of my recent converts go through the temple. Since then I have contacted her and I asked her to share what a difference the Church and attending the Temple has made in her life, she explained that to me in a letter she wrote:

Justin (Elder McNew),

I want to thank you for allowing me the opportunity to tell you how much the church has helped me in my life since converting to the church. I am also grateful to you for sharing the gospel with me and my family. It has been almost two years since you and your companion Elder Profit first knocked on my front door. I’m so fortunate you did because I’m not sure where I and my family would be today if you hadn’t. My family was in a dark place and desperately needed a change. That change was having Heavenly Father and the gospel in our life.

I think one of the most important changes was having daily prayer in my life. I really didn’t know how to pray before. But I kept at it and didn’t give up. I learned through prayer I am able to communicate with heavenly father. I’ve learned to confide in him, express my love for him and to seek guidance from him. I’m blessed to have built a relationship with him. One of the sweetest, most wonderful moments for me is having my son say prayer and him building his own relationship with heavenly father.

Reading the scriptures has also changed my life. The scriptures are the word of God. They have taught me the love heavenly father has for me and how much he cares for me. I’ve learned I am never without him; he is always by my side.

Prayer and reading the scriptures are only two of the many wonderful changes I’ve made since having the gospel in my life. For me it was a great start to a new beginning to a virtuous life. Prayer led to scripture study. Scripture study led to faith. Faith led to repentance. Repentance then led to baptism and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost. All those wonderful gifts heavenly father has given me has led me to one of the greatest gifts here on earth……the temple.

I feel so blessed to be able to go to the temple and be closer to heavenly father. The temple is so spiritual. I had such a wonderful experience I didn’t want to leave. I look forward to the day when I am sealed forever to my husband and children in the temple. It will be the most spiritual experience they will ever have. The gospel has strengthened my family and the love we have for each other. The gospel has brought us closer together and helps us live righteously. I know an eternal family is in our near future.

I am so grateful to have the gospel in my life and my family’s life and to be an example to them. It brings me so much joy and comfort knowing heavenly father is always here for me. Without the strength he gives me I wouldn’t be able to do it. There is not a day that goes by where I don’t think about how gracious and loving Heavenly Father is to me.

Justin I hope you know how much my family and I appreciate you. We cannot thank you enough for sharing the gospel with us. You have helped us so much. We are forever grateful to you. Thank you for serving us and Heavenly Father.

I hope this will help you with your talk on Sunday. I know you’ll be great! We miss you here in Yucaipa.

So we can see that making covenants with God and also going to the temple can and will bring us closer to God, give us strength and can assist in changing our lives for the better. I’ve personally seen huge blessings and strength come to me by attending the temple. The spirit Floods into your life and you are more capable of making righteous decisions and doing what the lord wants you to do. I know that there are 3 things that I learned on my mission that can help keep a person strong and if any of these 3 things are missing usually something is amiss or vice versa. Those 3 things are saying your Prayers, Attending Church and, Reading your Scriptures. In addition to that I want to add attending the Temple, it’s an additional strength, Before my mission my mom and I made it a point to regularly attend the Temple and I was able to be safe and withstand many temptations that came my way. I have a personal Testimony of regular temple attendance and the strength that it brings into my life and the strength it can bring to yours.

I also want to encourage anyone who has not made it to the temple yet to make it a goal, long or short term whatever it takes it is worth the sacrifice that is made, nothing in this world should be more important than doing what God would have us do. Along with that anyone who is debating going on a mission and that includes senior couples and single sisters do not even give it a second thought. Neither the time that I spent on my mission I would not have given that time to any other thing nor done it any other way. It was a time of great learning and growth for me and I can promise the same for you if you go and do what the lord would have you do. Or in McNew Terms DO WORK! Which means do your best and constantly rely on the spirit of lord. He will never lead you astray in anything that you do, as long as it is a righteous decision and as you are doing what he wants you to do.

11/05/12

Hey! So, this past week was crazy! We had Zone Leader Council on Thursday and exchanges with the assistant to the President. Then Friday we had a Zone Development Meeting to introduce our new zone focus for the month; and we had very limited time to plan for it. Then we just had busy days all week it seems.

I met up with Brittany Kenemore that moved from Corona to Bluffdale, got baptized, and then moved back to California   She has some friends here in Corona that she wanted us to meet up with (non-members) so we had lunch on Saturday and taught them a lesson. This Sunday her friend was going to come to church but wasn’t able to make it, but she came anyway to the YSA ward, and guess what? One of our investigators brought a friend and it turns out that Brittany has know him since they were like 11.  So she is going to help us fellowship him.

At church we were also introduced to a friend of this girl and it turns out she wants the lessons too! So we found like 2 new investigators at church and there were 4 non-members at church too! So :) that was awesome!

Our home-share was out of town so we had the whole house to ourselves.  On Saturday night we put a mattress in the living room next to the couch and watched "Joseph Smith, Prophet of the Restoration" on the big screen with surround sound! :) It was awesome, even though I fell asleep really fast.

Anyway, so, I am excited to come home and it feels right, but I am nervous at the same time. Everyone keeps reminding me that I am going home, but I don’t think it has quite registered yet.

Anyway. We had a pretty good week, but this next week is going to be even better! :) We have a few potential investigators that look pretty legit!

Okay well I just want to end with a few quotes:

"It’s okay to be happy with your success, but never be satisfied"

"The only person you should want to be better than today, is the person you were yesterday"

"If you want things that you have never had, then you have to do things that you have never done!"

I will include a few pics :) Love you!

Thanks to all of those who wrote me back and for all of your love and support, I definitely appreciate it and it seems to make my burden lighter.

So thanks, and also thank you for all of the prayers.

Remember: No sincere prayer ever goes un-answered.

 Love, Elder Justin McNew

Parable of the 10 Virgins

Whats up? So, nothing crazy or big happened this week, but I do have a few thoughts to share with you!

I was studying this talk that was given in the most recent General Conference; titled Converted Unto The Lord. I really enjoyed this talk and I would encourage all to go and read or watch it for themselves.  But, I  wanted to share a few thoughts that I had about this talk.

Towards the end of the talk, David A. Bednar breaks down the Parable of the 10 Virgins:

I now want to use one of many possible interpretations of the parable of the ten virgins to highlight the relationship between testimony and conversion. Ten virgins, five who were wise and five who were foolish, took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Please think of the lamps used by the virgins as the lamps of testimony. The foolish virgins took their lamps of testimony but took no oil with them. Consider the oil to be the oil of conversion.

“But the wise took oil [of conversion] in their vessels with their lamps [of testimony].

“While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

“And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.

“Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps [of testimony].

“And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil [even the oil of conversion]; for our lamps [of testimony are weak and] are gone out.

“But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves” (Matthew 25:4–9).

Were the five wise virgins selfish and unwilling to share, or were they indicating correctly that the oil of conversion cannot be borrowed? Can the spiritual strength that results from consistent obedience to the commandments be given to another person? Can the knowledge obtained through diligent study and pondering of the scriptures be conveyed to one who is in need? Can the peace the gospel brings to a faithful Latter-day Saint be transferred to an individual experiencing adversity or great challenge? The clear answer to each of these questions is no.

As the wise virgins emphasized properly, each of us must “buy for ourselves.” These inspired women were not describing a business transaction; rather, they were emphasizing our individual responsibility to keep our lamp of testimony burning and to obtain an ample supply of the oil of conversion. This precious oil is acquired one drop at a time—“line upon line [and] precept upon precept” (2 Nephi 28:30), patiently and persistently. No shortcut is available; no last-minute flurry of preparation is possible.

“Wherefore, be faithful, praying always, having your lamps trimmed and burning, and oil with you, that you may be ready at the coming of the Bridegroom” (D&C 33:17).

I promise that as we come to a knowledge of the truth and are converted unto the Lord, we will remain firm and steadfast and never fall away. Eagerly we will set aside our weapons of rebellion. We will be blessed with bright light from our lamps of testimony and an ample supply of the oil of conversion. And as each of us becomes more fully converted, we will strengthen our families, our friends, and our associates. Of these truths I testify in the sacred name of the Lord Jesus Christ, amen.

As I read and pondered on this talk I realized that none of us can share our Oil of Conversion with anyone. As I have gone about my mission and have gone through trials and struggles, "special assignments", leadership, lame companions, etc. I've wondered, "Why did the Lord, put this burden before me, What did I do to deserve this?"

Now can take a look back and see where I started and look at what I have become today, they were all blessing that the Lord gave me! I would not be who I am today if it weren't for those things.

So, as I continue to be strong in the faith and rely upon the Lord and be an example, I will be able to become more fully converted, and will strengthen my family, friends, and associates.

I cannot share the conversion that I have received,  but I can share my testimony.  I can shed a little light on those who have allowed their testimony to dwindle away. And, as I continue to allow my conversion/testimony to grow brighter and brighter the better help I can be to others.

I hope you see how that kinda goes together. It sounds a bit better in my head, unfortunately, I'm mortal and cannot think as clearly as I would like.

In conclusion, I want to share my testimony.

I know that God loves us! I know that Jesus is the Christ, I know that the Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints is the Lord's church that has been brought back and restored today through the prophet Joseph Smith and I know that we have men on the earth today who are called of God and continue to reveal his truths.

I love you and I'm so thankful for all the things I have learned and can share with you.

In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen!

Busy week as Zone Leader

10/22

What’s up y'all!

Hey, I love my new area and companion. Elder Romney and I are pretty much Best Friends :) He is from Alpine, Utah.  We are co-Zone Leader so that means he is a great missionary! We are planning on doing work in this area! Since it’s my last. It’s so weird to think about! 5 weeks? That’s unreal.

So this week (my first week in the ward) we were asked to give talks on Sunday. I spoke on the tender mercies of the Lord and some that I have experienced on my mission; then my companion spoke on missionary preparation and kind of like in Jen's ward, he put a lot of stress on the parents :) I feel that both the talks went really well! To be honest, I totally had the assistance of the Lord; I couldn’t have done it so well without the spirit. I’m sure the mantle helps too. But I was shocked that I hardly even looked at what I had written I like memorized it or something and was able to say what the Lord wanted me to. IT WAS AWESOME. I love feeling the power of the Holy Spirit as I speak! It’s amazing! :) So... anyway

This week was pretty busy!  Monday nights we have FHE with the YSA branch.  Tuesday is district meeting.  I don't know what we did on Wednesday.  On Thursday we plan.  Friday we had an interfaith dialogue thing.  Basically, a controlled debate/question-answer thing.  It's between Evangelical Christians and Mormonism.  Two well-educated men were representatives of each party. It was pretty good! Every time you felt the spirit from the Mormon guy the Christian guy would say something and out went the spirit, IT REALLY WAS OBVIOUS. The Holy Ghost never lies!!!! Ah!!! Anyway then Saturday we had service with some bicycle safety thing and there were PRO bikers present.  It was pretty sick, they did some ramps for us! Then we had to go to the church and do a numbers report for our zone for the MCM that we had at the crack of dawn on Sunday.  Then we had Sacrament for 2 wards, spoke in one and taught the Gospel Principals class for the other.  Then we went tracting to get our number for the day.

Needless to say I love being on the Lord's side!

I Love you!

Love, Elder McNew
